Look how big!
Here are some of the latest pictures of Benjamin, he's growing so much! Also, you can watch the video to see how well he talks! As soon as he learns how to laugh I'll be sure to take a video of that too!

This week, your baby measures over 16 inches long. He weighs about 3.3 pounds (try carrying four navel oranges) and is heading into a growth spurt. He can turn his head from side to side, and his arms, legs, and body are beginning to plump out as needed fat accumulates underneath his skin. He's probably moving a lot, too, so you may have trouble sleeping because your baby's kicks and somersaults keep you up. Take comfort: All this moving is a sign that your baby is active and healthy.
Yes, the moving around does get to be a little bit much at night-time, that's when he seems to be the most active. That, along with the hiccups and some Braxton-Hicks contractions make my stomach feel like a rollercoaster ride. But, I'm still doing very well. I do think yesterday was my last bike ride, however. Mj and I have enjoyed going walking and bike riding in the evenings, but yesterday my legs kept hitting my stomach when I pedaled and it wasn't the most comfortable thing, so I think I'll stick to walking from now on.

Baby's Growth

Your pregnancy: 29 weeks
Your baby now weighs about 2 1/2 pounds (like a butternut squash) and is a tad over 15 inches long from head to heel. His muscles and lungs are continuing to mature, and his head is growing bigger to make room for his developing brain. To meet his increasing nutritional demands, you'll need plenty of protein, vitamins C, folic acid, and iron. And because his bones are soaking up lots of calcium, be sure to drink your milk (or find another good source of calcium, such as cheese, yogurt, or enriched orange juice). This trimester, about 250 milligrams of calcium are deposited in your baby's hardening skeleton each day.

Baby's Growth
The baby shower on Saturday was so wonderful, I will post more details and pictures as soon as Patsy emails them to me.
Updates:
The doctor's appoinment on Thursday went well. I passed the gestational diabetes test, so that's one less thing to worry about. I now have to go to the doctor every two weeks, so I'll be back on Thursday the 18th. The unpleasant development is that I seem to have developed insomnia. I fall asleep just fine, but on Thursday, Friday, and Sunday I have woken up around 2am and just can't fall back asleep. Thank goodness I actually slept through the night on Saturday! At least it's summer vacation and I don't have to be at work at 7am, I'm able to take a nap later to make up the sleep that I lost at night.
Your pregnancy: 28 weeksBy this week, your baby weighs two and a quarter pounds (like a Chinese cabbage) and measures 14.8 inches from the top of his head to his heels. He can blink his eyes, which now sport lashes. With his eyesight developing, he may be able to see the light that filters in through your womb. He's also developing billions of neurons in his brain and adding more body fat in preparation for life in the outside world.

Baby's Growth
So, I have officially finished the 6th month and am now in the 3rd trimester. I can already see how things are going to be different.
1. I'm waddling when I walk. How do I know? I have very nice friends who point it out to me.
2. Heartburn. At least it is scientifically proven that heartburn=hair on the baby. We'll see. We had a pepperoni pizza from Myles last week, that proved to be a very bad decision. I will avoid all Myles pizza from now on.
3. The baby's movement has increased dramatically. I can feel it pretty much all the time. Yesterday Patsy even got to enjoy watching my shirt move a little bit.
4. Back pain.
So, there's good and there's not so good. Oh well, it's all part of the deal. Next week I go for my gestational diabetes test, so here's hoping that goes well. I'm also getting very excited for the baby shower next Saturday. Everyone has been working so hard on it, I'm sure it will be a wonderful day. I've even already gotten some gifts in the mail from friends who aren't able to make it; I have good friends.
Your pregnancy: 27 weeksThis week, your baby weighs almost 2 pounds (like a head of cauliflower) and is about 14 1/2 inches long with his legs extended. He's sleeping and waking at regular intervals, opening and closing his eyes, and perhaps even sucking his fingers. With more brain tissue developing, your baby's brain is very active now. While his lungs are still immature, they would be capable of functioning — with a lot of medical help — if he were to be born now. Chalk up any tiny rhythmic movements you may be feeling to a case of baby hiccups, which may be common from now on. Each episode usually lasts only a few moments, and they don't bother him, so just relax and enjoy the tickle.

Baby's Growth

Your pregnancy: 26 weeks
The network of nerves in your baby's ears is better developed and more sensitive than before. He may now be able to hear both your voice and your partner's as you chat with each other. He's inhaling and exhaling small amounts of amniotic fluid, which is essential for the development of his lungs. These so-called breathing movements are also good practice for when he's born and takes that first gulp of air. And he's continuing to put on baby fat. He now weighs about a pound and two-thirds and measures 14 inches (an English hothouse cucumber) from head to heel. If you're having a boy, his testicles are beginning to descend into his scrotum — a trip that will take about two to three days.
Last week of the second trimester!

Baby's Growth

Your pregnancy: 25 weeks
Head to heels, your baby now measures about 13 1/2 inches. Her weight — a pound and a half — isn't much more than an average rutabaga, but she's beginning to exchange her long, lean look for some baby fat. As she does, her wrinkled skin will begin to smooth out and she'll start to look more and more like a newborn. She's also growing more hair — and if you could see it, you'd now be able to discern its color and texture.
2 more weeks in the 2nd trimester.

Doctor's Appointment
I had my doctor's appointment today, and everything is still going along very well. I am 24 weeks 6 days, and thankfully the doctor was very pleased with my weight gain and said I'm on the right track.
The baby's heartbeat was 148 bpm, and my uterus is now 24cm long, which is exactly right. Apparantely your uterus measurement should match the week you are in.
We scheduled the last ultrasound for Thursday, June 18th, and I'm so excited for that. It will be a 3D ultrasound and we'll get a DVD recording of the the 3o minute ultrasound and pictures.
I go back in 3 weeks for my gestational diabetes test, and then I'll be in the 3rd trimester and I'll go to the doctor every 2 weeks. Yikes, it's a lot of doctor's visits. Good thing I'll be on summer vacation so I don't have to worry about my schedule. Our teacher workday is June 1st, and then I'll be on vacation!!

Baby's Growth
I love feeling the baby kick and move around, I can feel it very regularly now, especially when I eat! I have my next doctor's appointment on Thursday, May 14th. We've decided that we want another ultrasound at about 30 weeks to get a better look at the baby, so at this next appointment I'm going to ask about that and get that scheduled. I'm hoping that will give us a better idea of how the baby's growing and when to expect him. Plus, at 30 weeks the baby will actually look like a person, rather than a blob! Time is such a funny thing, because on one hand I feel like I've been waiting for this baby for FOREVER, but on the other hand I can't believe that I only have 16 weeks left. In 3 more weeks I'll be in the 3rd trimester, the home stretch!!
Your pregnancy: 24 weeksYour baby's growing steadily, having gained about 4 ounces since last week. That puts him at just over a pound. Since he's almost a foot long (picture an ear of corn), he cuts a pretty lean figure at this point, but his body is filling out proportionally and he'll soon start to plump up. His brain is also growing quickly now, and his taste buds are continuing to develop. His lungs are developing "branches" of the respiratory "tree" as well as cells that produce surfactant, a substance that will help his air sacs inflate once he hits the outside world. His skin is still thin and translucent, but that will start to change soon.

Baby's Growth

Your pregnancy: 23 weeks
Turn on the radio and sway to the music. With her sense of movement well developed by now, your baby can feel you dance. And now that she's more than 11 inches long and weighs just over a pound (about as much as a large mango), you may be able to see her squirm underneath your clothes. Blood vessels in her lungs are developing to prepare for breathing, and the sounds that your baby's increasingly keen ears pick up are preparing her for entry into the outside world. Loud noises that become familiar now — such as your dog barking or the roar of the vacuum cleaner — probably won't faze her when she hears them outside the womb.
We chaperoned Prom last night, and boy the baby was liking the music. The kicks were strong and frequent, I love it!

Ultrasound Pictures
Sorry it took us a week, but here are the ultrasound pictures from April 16, 2009
This first one is the big one that the technician printed, so it's much easier to see. You can clearly see the baby's head to the left with a nose and chin. Very cool stuff.

Baby's Growth
I'm a little confused as to my due date now, because it was originally August 30, but when we had the 1st ultrasound the techinician said the baby was a little big and she would say that I was about 6 days further, meaning a due date of August 24. However, the doctor said that he is not officially changing my due duate and is leaving it at August 30 even though the ultrasound once again showed that the baby was a little bit big. When I asked him about it, he said "If it were 7 days different or more, I would change it, but since it's only 6 days, I'm leaving it August 30. Look, I'm circling it here on your chart, so it's official."
So, I don't know what to do about the weeks...
Your pregnancy: 22 weeksAt 11 inches (the length of a spaghetti squash) and almost 1 pound, your baby is starting to look like a miniature newborn. His lips, eyelids, and eyebrows are becoming more distinct, and he's even developing tiny tooth buds beneath his gums. His eyes have formed, but his irises (the colored part of the eye) still lack pigment. If you could see inside your womb, you'd be able to spot the fine hair (lanugo) that covers his body and the deep wrinkles on his skin, which he'll sport until he adds a padding of fat to fill them in. Inside his belly, his pancreas — essential for the production of some important hormones — is developing steadily.
Mj Felt Baby Move!!!
I'm sorry it's been 3 weeks since I've updated the blog. We've been crazy busy and this has just gone to the bottom of the to-do list. However, I did have to write about this.
I've been feeling the baby move for about 2 weeks now, and it's getting stonger and more frequent every day. Yesterday I was on the computer and my arm was on my stomach and I was so sure that I felt the kick on my arm. So, when MJ got home from work and the kicks came back I called to him to come quick. Well, of course, we laid there for a few minutes and there were no kicks, and just as I was about to give up, there is was! He was so surprised, the said "What was that?" It was the baby! We were able to feel the movement for a few more minutes, and it was so much fun. There really IS something in there!
I promise that as soon as we scan the ultrasound pictures I'll post them.

Baby's Growth

Your baby's sensory development is exploding! Her brain is designating specialized areas for smell, taste, hearing, vision, and touch. Some research suggests that she may be able to hear your voice now, so don't be shy about reading aloud, talking to her, or singing a happy tune if the mood strikes you.Your baby weighs about 8 1/2 ounces and measures 6 inches, head to bottom — about the size of a large heirloom tomato. Her arms and legs are in the right proportions to each other and the rest of her body now. Her kidneys continue to make urine and the hair on her scalp is sprouting. A waxy protective coating called the vernix caseosa is forming on her skin to prevent it from pickling in the amniotic fluid.

Moving Right Along
Yesterday I KNOW I felt the baby move. There is no doubt in my mind, like a few weeks ago. It was moving and grooving for quite a few minutes, and we very cool to experience. It felt very different from what I thought I was feeling a few weeks ago, and was very distinct. Then, last night I woke up because the baby was doing flips. I literally could feel it flipping around in there, so amazing!! Today I've felt it just for a few seconds, but it's normal to only feel it every once in a while this early. I'm just very excited to have experienced that. They say that a person can feel their baby anytime between 16-22 weeks, and at 18 weeks 5 days I'm right in the middle of that range.
Also, per requests, this morning we took some pictures before church. My belly is definitely bigger, although I know it wasn't flat to begin with.
Lastly, we're going on our vacation to San Diego next weekend and we'll be gone from April 3-Apirl 11th. I will post vacation pictures online when we're back. HAPPY EASTER!!

Update
Unfortunately, there hasn't been much to update since last week's doctor's appointment. My belly is growing slowly but steadily, and I keep meaning to take a picture to post. I'll try to do that soon. I haven't fel the baby move, and I'm sure that what I felt two weeks ago was not the baby, just something else. Mj and I are now just counting down until our vacation to San Diego on April 4th.
Baby's Growth

Your pregnancy: 18 weeks
Head to rump, your baby is about 5 1/2 inches long (about the length of a bell pepper) and he weighs almost 7 ounces. He's busy flexing his arms and legs — movements that you'll start noticing more and more in the weeks ahead. His blood vessels are visible through his thin skin, and his ears are now in their final position, although they're still standing out from his head a bit. A protective covering of myelin is beginning to form around his nerves, a process that will continue for a year after he's born. If you're having a girl, her uterus and fallopian tubes are formed and in place. If you're having a boy, his genitals are noticeable now, but he may hide them from you during an ultrasound.

Doctor's Appointment
I had my montly doctor's appointment this afternoon. Everything is very much on track, and it was neat because he showed me how I can lay down and feel the baby inside me. I feel kind of bad poking at the baby like that, but it's pretty amazing. I can't wait until MJ can feel the baby too!! The other good thing about this appointment is that I got to schedule my next ultrasound. We go back on April 16th, and that will be my next appointment and the ultrasound. Patsy and MJ will come with me, and the baby will actually look like baby rather than a little shrimp!! So, that will be pretty neat to see. The bummer is that it is the last ultrasound the doctor does. That means that we would have to go the remaining 20 weeks without seeing the baby anymore. I think that around 30 weeks we'll be going to an ultrasound clinic in Toledo where you can get additional ultrasounds done, but insurance won't pay for it. We're okay with that, it's only $75, and that's totally worth it for us to be able to see our baby again. Besides, at 30 weeks we'll be able to see every facial feature. But, that's still a long ways off. The next 4 weeks will go slowly enough while we wait for our ultrasound, I can't wait!!

Your pregnancy: 17 weeks
Your baby's skeleton is changing from soft cartilage to bone, and the umbilical cord — her lifeline to the placenta — is growing stronger and thicker. Your baby weighs 5 ounces now (about as much as a turnip), and she's around 5 inches long from head to bottom. She can move her joints, and her sweat glands are starting to develop.

Baby's Growth

Your pregnancy: 16 weeks
Get ready for a growth spurt. In the next few weeks, your baby will double his weight and add inches to his length. Right now, he's about the size of an avocado: 4 1/2 inches long (head to rump) and 3 1/2 ounces. His legs are much more developed, his head is more erect than it has been, and his eyes have moved closer to the front of his head. His ears are close to their final position, too. The patterning of his scalp has begun, though his locks aren't recognizable yet. He's even started growing toenails. And there's a lot happening inside as well. For example, his heart is now pumping about 25 quarts of blood each day, and this amount will continue to increase as your baby continues to develop.
P.S. I have now gained 3 lbs. and am starting to have my belly stick out a little more. I'll try to post some pictures next week.

Felt Baby?
Yesterday around 6:30 pm we were in the car, and I think I may have felt the baby. I'm not sure because I've heard it described as popcorn popping or a goldfish swimming around in there, but that often it's just gas, not the baby. Well, I don't know which it was for sure, but it sure felt like popcorn popping or being poked from the inside. Our scientific way of determining whether it was the baby or gas was whether or not I passed gas within 10 minutes. I didn't, so, we're going ahead with our belief that it was the baby!! I'll be paying more attention in the next few days, because apparantely you're supposed to feel it regularly and around the same time each day. I still don't really look any different, but I'm starting to see teeny tiny changes, so I'm thinking that in the next few weeks things will start to look a little different.
Mj is leaving today for his business trip in New Orleans, so I'll be home alone until Friday night.

Baby's Heartbeat
We rented a fetal doppler, just like the one they use at the doctor's office, so that we can listen to the baby's heartbeat anytime we want. It's amazing how available technology is. You can rent these from medical equipment companies and from the internet for only about $30 a month. So, yesterday we finally had success with it after a few days of hunting for the baby. On Monday, when it arrived, we were so excited to find a strong heartbeat almost immediately, but when I did the math it was 100 beats per minute, so that was me. A baby's heartbeat is much faster. But, last night we finally got it! It was 152 beats per minute. The cool thing about this machine is that it records the hearbeat, so we have uploaded it here for everyone to hear!! Click on the link to hear.

Baby's Growth

Your pregnancy: 15 weeks
Your growing baby now measures about 4 inches long, crown to rump, and weighs in at about 2 1/2 ounces (about the size of an apple). She's busy moving amniotic fluid through her nose and upper respiratory tract, which helps the primitive air sacs in her lungs begin to develop. Her legs are growing longer than her arms now, and she can move all of her joints and limbs. Although her eyelids are still fused shut, she can sense light. If you shine a flashlight at your tummy, for instance, she's likely to move away from the beam. There's not much for your baby to taste at this point, but she is forming taste buds. Finally, if you have an ultrasound this week, you may be able to find out whether your baby's a boy or a girl! (Don't be too disappointed if it remains a mystery, though. Nailing down your baby's sex depends on the clarity of the picture and on your baby's position. He or she may be modestly curled up or turned in such a way as to "hide the goods.")

P.S. As of this time no final decision has been made about whether of not we will find out the baby's gender at our ultrasound in April.

What's up
I haven't really posted in a while, but that's because there hasn't been much to post. Mj and I have taken turns being sick, which pretty much describes the past three weeks for us. This Sunday was the first time that we've both felt pretty decent at the same time, so that's been a nice change of pace.
Babywise, not much is happening right now. I'm not sick anymore, and am starting to get my energy back. So, pretty much I feel normal. Most times I don't even "feel" pregnant because all of the symptoms have gone away. My body is still pretty much the same. If you looked closely, you might think that I've gained some weight, but really I've only gained one pound. Some of my pants still fit, but anything that was somewhat tight before doesn't fit anymore. But, really, I don't look pregnant. I'm sure I could find some shirts that would make me look pregnant, but it's not like I had a flat belly to begin with! We're watching closely, and I'll be sure to post when I start rounding out.
The next doctor's appointment is on March 18th.

Crazy
Saw this on the internet, it's so crazy and funny I just had to share it. I sure hope I'll get one of these as a gift!!
This is the BABY MOP.
Yes, that's right. If your child is going to be crawling around on the floor anway, they might as
well get some housework done!
There is also a video of the baby mop in action at http://vimeo.com/3263721.
People are so cruel.

Second Trimester
Well, I am officially in the 2nd trimester, so things should be picking up. The past week has been pretty uneventful, but I'm looking forward to having my belly pop out soon.
Baby's Growth

Your pregnancy: 14 weeks
Your baby can now squint, frown, grimace, pee, and possibly suck his thumb! Thanks to brain impulses, his facial muscles are getting a workout as his tiny features form one expression after another. His kidneys are producing urine, which he releases into the amniotic fluid around him — a process he'll keep up until birth. He can grasp, too, and if you're having an ultrasound now, you may even catch him sucking his thumb. In other news: Your baby's stretching out. From head to bottom, he measures 3 1/2 inches — about the size of a lemon — and he weighs 1 1/2 ounces. His body's growing faster than his head, which now sits upon a more distinct neck. By the end of this week, his arms will have grown to a length that's in proportion to the rest of his body. (His legs still have some lengthening to do.) He's starting to develop an ultra-fine, downy covering of hair, called lanugo, all over his body. Your baby's liver starts making bile this week — a sign that it's doing its job right — and his spleen starts helping in the production of red blood cells. Though you can't feel his tiny punches and kicks yet, your little pugilist's hands and feet (which now measure about 1/2 inch long) are more flexible and active.

Appointment
Well, due to Saturday's "episode" the doctor wanted to see me this week. It was pretty pointless and uneventful. I waiting in the room for 45 minutes reading "Highlights" magazine. The doctor came in, and he's how it went:
"How are you feeling?"
"Fine, just the cold"
"Your urine specimen doesn't show that you're dehydrated right now, so that's good"
"I know, I didn't think I was dehydrated on Saturday, I drink more water than a fish"
"Oh, that's good then, glad you're feeling better. Let's try to find the heartbeat....can't hear anything, it must be turned around. Well, keep drinking lots of water, see you in 4 weeks"
Well, that accomplished nothing. So, my next appointment is on March 18th. Hopefully it will be more eventful.

Baby's Growth

Your pregnancy: 13 weeks
Fingerprints have formed on your baby's tiny fingertips, her veins and organs are clearly visible through her still-thin skin, and her body is starting to catch up with her head — which makes up just a third of her body size now. If you're having a girl, she now has more than 2 million eggs in her ovaries. Your baby is almost 3 inches long (the size of a medium shrimp) and weighs nearly an ounce.

This is the last week of the 1st Trimester!!

That's a new one
Well, this morning was very interesting. I fainted for the first time in a very long time around 9:30am. I had finished eating breakfast and we were talking in the kitchen when I thought I was going to be sick. So, I told MJ to move over and stood in front of sink breathing heavily. My vision started to blur and I remember saying "I think I'm going to pass out" and next thing I know I wake up on the floor with him looking down at me. Thank goodness he was standing right behind me! He said I just slumped back right into him and kind of twitched a little bit. But, I wasn't out for more than a few seconds. Mj says it was just long enough for him to get me to the ground. His response "You would have made quite a thud." My hero.
Anyway, I'll be calling the doctor on Monday to report what happened and see if they think anything of it. I feel fine now, though. I'll just take it easy and not go to the gym until I speak to the doctor. So, I'll post again, hopefully to say that it was nothing unusual.
**UPDATE**
Okay, so after I posted I read my books, and they said that while dizzyness is quite common, actually fainting is not. Both recommended calling your doctor immediately, so I did, and the nurse on call for the weekend told me to go to the ER, not to wait until Monday. So, MJ and I got to spend a very lovely 3 hours there. During that time, they took a urine sample, gave me an IV, monitored by blood pressure and heart rate, did an EKG to check my heart for irregularities, and did an ultrasound to make sure the baby was okay.
Okay, so the ultrasound part was a nice bonus. It was cool because the baby was squirming all around, we could see it flailing it's arms and legs.
After 3 hours, I was released. There was nothing wrong with me other than a touch of dehydration. I find this diagnosis funny because I drink more water than anyone else I know, but I'm also going to the bathroom ridiculously often. So, I'm supposed to just take it easy for a few days, drink tons of water, and call the doctor on Monday to check in. Everything's fine!

Psalm 139: 13-17
13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,
16 your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
17 How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them!
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

Baby's Growth

Your pregnancy: 12 weeks
The most dramatic development this week: reflexes. Your baby's fingers will soon begin to open and close, his toes will curl, his eye muscles will clench, and his mouth will make sucking movements. In fact, if you prod your abdomen, your baby will squirm in response, although you won't be able to feel it. His intestines, which have grown so fast that they protrude into the umbilical cord, will start to move into his abdominal cavity about now, and his kidneys will begin excreting urine into his bladder.Meanwhile, nerve cells are multiplying rapidly, and in your baby's brain, synapses are forming furiously. His face looks unquestionably human: His eyes have moved from the sides to the front of his head, and his ears are right where they should be. From crown to rump, your baby-to-be is just over 2 inches long (about the size of a lime) and weighs half an ounce.

Funny Outfits
So, someone on my baby chat boards posted a link to this website that has some really cute and funny baby outfits. I thought I would share.
There are like 2 million designs on this website and I quit after looking at 800 of them!

Oh, this one is tame. There were even MORE sexually suggestive ones on there that I just couldn't bring myself to post because they were so wrong.
